The Truth About Twin Beds

Enter at Your Own Risk: decorating a teen’s room

Since a teen’s room will be a visible reflection of their tastes and personality, let them decorate their own room. Set guidelines and retain your veto power, especially regarding changes that might be permanent; make any must do’s and don’ts known before they embark on their decorating venture.

In addition to basic furniture needs, make a list of extra furnishings they will require like a computer cart or wardrobe armoire or entertainment center.

Know the dimensions of the room, so that you can get a better idea of just how much space you will need to plan for.

Make a list or draw a rough sketch of what the room will look like.

How much do you want to spend? Don’t forget to make a budget. Let your teen decide if a really cool desk is more important than a particular type of bed.

If you want to purchase a custom size mattress/bed, keep in mind that many bedding manufacturers will offer youth-themed sheets and comforters in twin sizes only.

Because their likes and dislikes can change so rapidly at this stage of their lives, select a decorating theme only if they suggest it. Instead, base the room’s focus on a favorite color, a type of material like leather or fake fur, or a treasured object.

Since there are so many types and styles to choose from, consider what kind of bed your teen will need and like. If limited space isn’t an issue, now is the time they might want to trade in the twin bed for a full/double bed. If you are decorating the room for two, a bunk bed will maximize available space.

Consider putting the bed, computer desk and storage cubes on casters to give your teen the option of changing the room around depending their mood or the current project or activity.

Since teens are known for playing their music loud, choose thicker style window treatments and area rugs to help absorb sound.

Bedroom sets are a quick and economical way of furnishing a teen’s room with the basics.

If your teen has chosen a bunk bed, allow two feet of space between the bunk and the ceiling.

When planning a teen’s room, include an easy-to-use storage system. If opening the closet door might seem like too much effort, consider removing the doors and installing an open concept organizer that will allow you and/or your teen to change the configuration as required.

Proper lighting is especially important in a teen’s room. When deciding on the placement of their furniture, make use of the bedroom’s natural light, and ensure that there will be enough overhead and task lighting for homework, etc.

If limited space is an issue, consider purchasing furniture that incorporates extra storage like a captain’s bed or a bookcase headboard.
